A Boost of Ophidian Brilliance
Few modern treble boost pedals can match the venomous voracity of Catalinbread’s Naga Viper MkII. And with an assortment of upgrades in this second evolution, it’s easy to understand why. The Naga Viper MkII adds an Attenuator control; Sweetwater guitarists have discovered that it better manages the input signal levels of preceding effects in their pedal chains, thus preserving that iconic Rangemaster-emulated tone. The pedal’s remaining three controls, Heat, Boost, and Range retain the detailed principles established in the original pedal for overseeing gain, output level, and permitted bass boost, respectively. Aside from the addition of a new control, the Naga Viper MkII sees even more improvement by way of a higher-gain transistor that supplies enough trebly intensity to satisfy even the most demanding of tone connoisseurs. Supporting 9–18-volt DC power, the Naga Viper MkII is poised to strike and inject your pedalboard with a hard-cutting treble boost that’ll showcase your lead lines with agelessly brilliant appeal.
What’s new with the MkII?
By adding an Attenuator control to the Naga Viper MkII, Catalinbread has essentially given guitarists the ability to level out unwanted saturation from the pre-effected signal. As a result, you’ll preserve the raw, treble-boosted tone of the Naga Viper MkII, sending it straight to your amp for an entirely optimized showcasing of every vitality of the performance. Catalinbread also revamped the pedal’s circuitry and swapped out its old transistor for a new high-gain version, permitting players to dabble in much hotter tones than its predecessor. From subtly sharpened to searingly scorched, you stay in the driver’s seat.
Controls for any concept
The Naga Viper MkII stays faithful to its first iteration with the rest of its control set, providing Heat, Boost, and Range knobs. The Heat knob essentially poses a gain control for players, creating and extinguishing grittiness for a faithful treble boost when slightly engaged and an onslaught of overdrive when cranked. Up next is Boost, which, as you might’ve guessed, levels your outputted boost effect! A take on the fabled Rangemasters that left the factory with slightly hotter circuitry, this control affords players an enormous range of boost to work with that will meet the needs of virtually any application.
Lastly, for treble boosters preferring more low end, Range is a lowpass filter that permits greater bass boost the further you turn the dial. When unengaged entirely, the Range control displays the Naga Viper MkII as a treble booster in its truest form. Once you’ve found the boost that speaks your language, there’s little left to tinker with. Simply stomp, and your sound is boosted like it was born to.

VIPER BITE!
This pedal when dialed in adds the edge that takes the muddiness out of a cranked tube amp. Beware the manual says to turn it all the way up. I found that cross eying the Range and Heat knobs towards each other and settting the Boost to high noon added the grit I was looking for. You can still use your guitar's volume knob to get back to a clean setting.
This pedal delivers the raw rock and roll sound you are looking for if you love ACDC, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath or just want to make your guitar penetrate the mix. It boosts treble. Worked with single coils and especially well with humbuckers. You can also use it in front of other dirt/fuzz pedals. To be honest, trying it out at home I was not sure about it, but when I took it to band practice and heard it in context along bass and drums it really shined. Even my bass player, who is a rock n' roll aficionado commented on how good the guitar sounded. Its more of an eq pedal than a dirt pedal. But it does that eq exceptionally well with all the dirt you could want to add.
It is it for everybody? Maybe. But if you "play the amp" you can set it and forget it to shape your tone.
