This recipe originally came from Mr. Wonderful’s mother. Mr. W has fond memories of eating these from his childhood. He has talked about us making these homemade snickers bars for the longest time but for some reason we never got around to it. He was going to be gone camping with our two middle boys over the weekend and knew I was planning on doing some Christmas baking with our youngest son. So he asked really nicely if I could make them for him. 🙂

I had originally planned on making something else for this post instead, but when the request was made, my plans changed. 🙂 I was not sure how this was going to go since I had never made them before but they were actually fairly easy to make.

He remembers them being cut up and stored in the freezer, then they could grab one out anytime they wanted. I put them in the freezer after they were done and that is why you can see a little bit on condensation on them in the pictures. They were thawing out as we were taking the photos. I couldn’t wait to try one and you guys, they are so yummy!! They are really rich so I cut them into little pieces.

A great tip that I saw somewhere is to line your 9×13 pan with parchment paper when you are making bars. The parchment paper will not stick to the bars and the paper also makes it easier to get the bars out. Not to mention, easy clean up!! I was really surprised how much the nugget layer really tasted like a Snickers bar.

To speed things up and make it a little easier on myself, I just melted the chocolate and caramel layers in the microwave. Then it was simple to pour them over the previous layers.

Make sure you completely cool each layer before adding the next. This was easily done by throwing the whole pan in the freezer for a bit.

Freezing the whole pan also made it easier to cut them into pieces. Otherwise the caramel gets really sticky!
