How to Use Baking Powder (2024)

Baking Powder is used to raise many baked items, through an acid and alkali reaction that takes place when it is combined with liquid and heat, generating air bubbles and lift during baking. The active ingredients in FREEE Baking Powder are mono calcium phosphate which is acidic and sodium bicarbonate which is alkaline. When too much baking powder is used baked goods can taste soapy.

Uses of Baking Powder Within Recipes

Making Self Raising Flour

To make Self Raising Flour; measure 100g FREEE Plain White Flour into a bowl and add 2 teaspoons of baking powder. Stir to combine and sieve into another bowl.

Bread and Scones

Baking Powder is used to make un-yeasted breads and deliciousin Gluten Free Scones.

Cakes and Muffins

Perfect in recipes such as our Gluten Free Buckwheat and Blackberry Cupcake Muffinsby simply mixing baking powder with plain flour.

Self Raising flour already includes baking powder.

Biscuits

When baking powder is used in biscuits it can strengthen the dough as the biscuits rise as in our Gluten Free Double Choc Chip Biscuits.

Pastry

Baking powder is not normally added to pastry although a very small pinch can be helpful if using a coarse whole grain flour.

Batter

When added to batter in place of or to compliment egg, baking powder helps to aerate the mixture as in our Gluten Free Chickpea Flour Batter.
