Raquel Ark here beautifully encapsulates what listening looks like in stressful, challenging situations in business contexts. .It made me wonder; What #listening in the challenging context of #healthcare delivery as physicians look like? .As I read through I found the answer in the article itself: “And usually, we remember the people who listen to us, not the people who are talking all the time.”.A distinguishing factor in excellent physicians is their ability to #listen. A listening checklist that helps me cater to the VAST responsibilities and opinions that I cater to as a physician ⏩.1) Validate:🌟Recognizing that difference in opinion is not a parameter to diminish the importance of a patient/colleague. We can have different journeys as long as we have the same destination i.e. patient well-being. .2) Acknowledge:🌟Self-awareness about possible strengths and areas of improvement in myself and my team helps me to be intentional about the choices I make on how to communicate instead of emotional snap responses. .3) Surrender:🌟I ditch all premade agendas when I enter interactions and aim to understand via active listening. Solutions present themselves when I'm immersed in the process. .4) Triumph:🌟I reflect on what practices made a difference in my experiences in the hospital. . Blending listening practices in and outside the hospital as a #physician has led to immense personal and professional satisfaction. No wonder listening is my #superpower. #ListeninginMedicine #ListeningtoLearn

This is a GREAT article that I didn't mean to read today - I don't even know how I chanced upon it. But for many reasons, it resonated with me. I had a great chat yesterday with Jane Porter about the power of conversation, creativity and workplace cultures and so this piece has me reflecting on a couple of key takeaways from that linked to this article (there are MANY in here! I hope you read it, too):💡 The power of the pause. Oh, how we want to fill that silence ... but don't! Whether you are a manager, a facilitator or a parent, it would be so powerful if we just sat a moment longer and held space for one another. Let a question linger. Don't answer it yourself. See what happens!💡 Asking “How focused can you be during this?” when you begin a presentation or meeting (especially an online one). And then ask participants to make one adjustment to their environment to help them show up with the level of focus they’d like for themselves. Simple! Genius!💡 Remember that "listening is crucial in helping you and the people around you learn and grow. You don’t have to talk much to contribute to a great conversation. But, when you do speak, speak with purpose: ask questions, be curious, and seek to understand." Try (even if just for one day) to be the person who speaks less than the others in the room, but listens actively and contributes great value. #communicationskills #listeningskills #listenandlearn https://lnkd.in/gQYfDrtG

Consider this:The most important skill in communication and business is also in danger of extinction. ⬇️That's according to Matt Toledo in his article for Forbes, Business Tools: The Art of Listening. This observation of Matt's resonated with me:"Active listening makes youinfluential because you are leaning into the person and trying to understand, build trust and empathize before developing solutions and recommendations."Lately I've been catching up with friends and former colleagues (over ☕ coffee of course...this is how we roll in Brisbane). And when I've asked them what fellow team colleagues don't do well and could do better, their responses are unanimous: ⬇️"Listening"They express a sense that people aren't really paying attention to them and are just focused on what they plan to say next. ✅ The great news is that we can all get better at active listening, starting TODAY.💡 Need help? Take a look at Matt's tips to better connect with your colleagues. I like them because they're easy to action. ==>https://lnkd.in/gKu3i6CS #business #team #communication #coffee #people #collaboration

Active listening is a critical aspect of creating a #brilliant experience. Here are 5 ways to improve your active listening (to customers or colleagues) 1. Put down your phoneThe phone is an interruption, even if you are not actively using it. When the mind wanders, we think about what we could check. A best practice is just to remove it from the room, or make it sight unseen. 2. Stop interruptingListening is hard - the mind wanders and we have the answer in our head already! When you find that you have tuned out, make a conscious effort to come back. My challenge to you this week is to wait for people to be fully complete with their thought before responding. 3. Make eye contactI’ve noticed that with the number or virtual meetings, most have lost the ability to make eye contact in person. Again, awareness is key. Eye contact shows you are fully present. 4. Clarify and ConfirmAn extremely powerful listening tool is reflecting. Clarify by saying “Just to clarify…”Confirm by asking “I’d like to make sure I heard what you just said”Reflection works.5. Ask relevant questionsQuestions indicate that you heard what was said - and that you want to know more. Plus, this is the opportunity to ensure understanding. To recap:- Be fully present- Recognize when you’ve stopped listening - Ask people to go back if needed- Ask thoughtful questions In other words: ENGAGEBe the person who people say, "Wow, they really understand me"#listening #leadership #customerexperience #employeeexperienceIf you want more ways to #bebrilliant in life and work, subscribe to the #bebrilliant newsletter or consider following me at Suzanne Olson

Why “Listening to Win” is a losing strategy for collaborative conversations. If your goal is to develop a collaborative project, good listening is fundamental. But, not all types of listening are the same. There are 3 main types of listening:Listening to Win - The primary focus is on winning an argument or proving a point. Here, you’re less interested in understanding the speaker’s perspective, and more engaged in finding flaws in their argument, formulating counterpoints, or strategizing the next move in the conversation. This is a competition not a conversation.Listening to Fix - The primary purpose of "listening to fix" is to identify and solve problems or challenges that the speaker is expressing. This approach to listening is often solution-oriented, focusing on addressing issues and devising practical solutions or offering advice.Listening to see - The primary focus of "listening to see", also known as empathetic or active listening, is to truly understand the speaker's perspective and feelings. This approach fosters deeper communication and connection because it involves more than just hearing the words that someone says."Listening to win" is not a strategy for success. You may win the argument, but you’ll lose the relationship."Listening to fix" is useful, but be careful not rush to “fix” too soon. You can’t truly “fix” until you understand."Listening to see" is almost always the best place to start. It fosters understanding, builds trust, encourages communication and promotes creative problem-solving.What is your default listening mode? I’ve felt myself changing over the years:In my 10's - Not listening at all! In my 20’s - I listened to win (unchecked ego!)In my 30’s - I listened to fix (think I have all the answers!)In my 40’s - I do my best to listen to see (realising this is how to build meaningful relationships)It’s still easy to drift back into the "win" and "fix" modes, but hopefully it’s only for the right reasons.#collaboration #Collaborativeconversation #communicationskills #skillsdevelopment #listeningskills

As an introvert you may struggle at work, feeling like you're invisible or unheard in a workplace that seems to favor the extrovert. So, what to do? As an introvert you possess a variety of unique superpowers that can elevate your communication skills and enable you to stand out as effective communicator rather than having your ideas continue to go unnoticed. How?👉 Embrace Active Listening:Most introverts have an innate ability to listen attentively. Leverage this by engaging in active listening techniques that demonstrate empathy, rapport, and a genuine desire to understand.👉 Prepare common responses:Ever have your mind go blank when someone asks you about your weekend? Prepare specific responses for common social or work situations. This will give you confidence and help you articulate your thoughts on the spot.👉 Leverage Written Communication:Introverts tend to excel in written communication. Utilize this strength to create impactful presentations, reports, and emails that clearly convey your ideas.👉 Host with Confidence:Embrace my "Host Mentality" by taking the lead in meetings or events. This will allow you to control the conversation and ensure that all voices are heard, including yours.👉 Connect with Empathy:Practice empathy in your communication. Understand and respond appropriately to the emotions of others, building trust and fostering meaningful connections.👉 Plan your Networking:Introverts thrive on planning and preparation. Use this to your advantage by researching audience members, formulating questions, and gathering insights to enhance your participation in meetings and social events.👉 Communicate Your Needs:Don't hesitate to express your communication preferences. If you need some alone time or prefer to communicate via email, let others know.👉 Embrace Energy Management:Recognize that social interaction can drain your energy. Plan for social events by scheduling breaks and using energy-saving tactics like choosing quieter venues or limiting your time in large groups.By embracing your superpowers and incorporating specific tactics, you can transform your communication confidence. This happened recently for my coaching client Sara: "I can't thank Alby enough for the way he helped me find opportunities to contribute at work in a way that aligns with my introversion. My manager actually just complimented me on a contribution I made after a recent department meeting. Unbelievable."

🐦 On the 4th Day of Christmas: Elevating Success with Four Calling Birds and Improved Communication Skills! 📞As we embrace the fourth day of festive cheer, let's turn our focus to a gift that keeps on giving: enhanced communication skills, much like the Four Calling Birds harmonizing their messages! 🎄✨ I know there are a few in my network who either struggle with their communication or are keen to improve their skills so I have outlined some easy ways to improve in this area:Active Listening Workouts: 🎧Practice active listening by fully focusing on what others are saying without interrupting. Reflect back what you've heard to ensure understanding. Engage in activities like listening to podcasts, attending seminars, or participating in workshops to fine-tune your listening skills.Expand Your Vocabulary: 📚Introduce new words into your vocabulary to express ideas more precisely. Read regularly, explore new genres, and challenge yourself with literature that stretches your language skills. Thesaurus apps can be handy for discovering synonyms and expanding your word choices.Seek Feedback: 🔄Actively seek feedback on your communication style from colleagues, mentors, or friends. Constructive criticism is valuable for growth.Role-playing Scenarios: 🎭Enlist a friend or colleague for role-playing scenarios that mimic real-life communication challenges. This helps build confidence and adaptability in different situations. Focus on both verbal and non-verbal communication aspects during role-playing exercises.Presentation Practice: 🗣️Regularly practice public speaking and presentations. This can be in front of a mirror, a small group, or even through virtual platforms. Utilize video recording to review your delivery, refine your tone, and identify areas for improvement.Do you have any other top tips? Write them in the comments below!#Communication #12DaysofChristmas #Skills
