While the U.S. population is expected to grow 7.1 percent in the coming decade, the number of people age 55 and older will increase 11.5 percent. The number of people 75 and older is expected to increase 26.2 percent. The report, "Human Factors Research Needs for an Aging Population," called for more study to determine how people of various ages spend their time and how their abilities to perform certain tasks change with age. It also recommended that a handbook compiled on what already is known about the needs and abilities of older people, for use by architects, psychologists, doctors, computer scientists, educators and others.
