What Is A Frittata

A frittata is an Italian egg dish that can be served at breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. It's an easy egg dish usually made in a cast iron pan. Frittatas are enriched with heavy cream or whole milk, other optional ingredients are added before being baked in the oven until just barely firm in the middle.

They're often flavored with fresh herbs and fresh veggies like red bell peppers, green peppers, or mushrooms as well as savory bits of meat like bacon or ham. Shredded sharp cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, crumbled goat cheese or feta cheese are often melted on top or sprinkled over after baking. It can be served hot, warm or cold.

Traditional Side Dishes

Classic sides for a frittata include a fresh green salad, fruit salad, crispy potatoes and/or some fresh bread, scones or toast. Bacon, ham or sausage are also popular side dishes.

In Italy and Spain, frittata is often cooled to room temperature and served as a snack or antipasti. It is cut into wedges or squares and served with a crisp salad or flavorful, light soup and a glass of wine. (Choose a crisp white wine, sparkling wine or a light red wine.)
