Oh my goodness, when I was a kid, our local hometown restaurant had THE BEST breaded chicken sandwich EVER! I have fond memories of my dad picking me up from school to take me out to lunch to get that very special sandwich.

We didn’t have a Chick-Fil-A so this was as close as we could get to that amazing sandwich that reminds me of this one. So I decided it was time I created a homemade AND gluten-free version of it myself. The key is a double dip of breading. First, a GF flour coating then a breadcrumb crust.

Add the bacon, tomato, lettuce (perfectly shredded with good ol’ ranch dressing), some cheese and a deliciously fluffy gluten-free burger bun and you’ve got THE BEST breaded chicken sandwich EVVVVVAAA!

But before we dive into the recipe, you probably have a few questions about what menu items are and aren’t gluten-free at Chick-Fil-A right?

If you are like me, you love a good old classic Chick-Fil-A meal of waffle fries (I take mine with Chick Fil A sauce, bbq sauce and polynesian sauce thank you), one of their chicken sandwiches and that cute little fruit cup.

But sadly, since being diagnosed with celiac disease and having to go gluten-free, I can’t have some of the things they offer like the beloved chicken sandwich. I usually go for grilled nuggets now but sometimes you just reeeeeally want that chicken sandwich.

That’s why I created this one. But what other gluten-free foods do they have other than their grilled chicken nuggets? Well, let’s talk about it…

Are Chick-Fil-A fries gluten-free?

Yes! Chick-Fil-A has a dedicated fryer for their waffle french fries, so there is a very low risk for a gluten exposure. It is one of the best gluten-free menu items in my opinion!

Fries are naturally gluten-free, since they are just potatoes and peanut oil. Since Chick-Fil-A does not add anything to them, their waffle fries are safe for those who have celiac disease or stay away from gluten.

Just make sure to let the workers know so they can make sure all preparation areas are clean and safe as well. I have found that one local restaurant may do better than another at this so always talk to them first about their allergen menu options and preparation. It should be the first thing you do before ordering at any chain restaurant or any fast food place for that matter.

Do Chick-Fil-A hash browns have gluten?

Chick-Fil-A’s hash browns are cooked similarly to their waffle fries. To steer clear from the risk of cross-contamination, their hash browns are also cooked in a separate fryer.

Since hash browns are also made of potatoes, they are naturally gluten free. That is, unless they add a wheat coating on them. The peanut oil the hash browns are cooked in make them fried without adding gluten.

Does Chick-Fil-A have a gluten-free bun?

Chick-Fil-A does offer a gluten-free bun as a menu item in some locations. It is available with their grilled chicken sandwich, but can also be substituted with any of their sandwiches.

The GF bun is made of quinoa and amaranth. If your location doesn’t have this option, they can always make your sandwich into a lettuce wrap.

For the home chef, Canyon Bakehouse buns are a great GF bun choice. They are able to hold a sandwich together and will not fall apart!

Is their chicken sandwich gluten-free?

No. They have a grilled chicken sandwich as a menu item, but not a regular gluten-free sandwich.

Almost no fast food restaurants have gluten-free fried chicken sandwich options, which can be very frustrating for those with a gluten allergy.

Since there is no GF fried chicken sandwich option, I decided to come up with my own! I was tired of missing out on the chicken sandwich hype, so I made up my own recipe. My GF chicken sandwich recipe is so similar to a chicken sandwich that it will be hard to tell the difference making it the perfect gluten-free meal!

What you need to make this recipe

This recipe is pretty much self-explanatory, but here are a few tips about the ingredients you will need to make my delicious gluten-free Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich!

Gluten-Free Bread

Fortunately, there are many options out there when it comes to GF bread. My personal favorite is Canyon Bakehouse’s gluten-free bread. They have many options for every type of occasion, like my gluten-free French Toast Bites!

Most main grocery stores will have GF bread options. Trader Joe’s is a good place to shop because they offer many brands and many options for GF bread. For another recipe, check out my fried ravioli recipe where we use bread to make breadcrumbs.

Gluten-Free Hamburger Buns

To have a delicious GF Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich, there has to be a good gluten-free hamburger bun. Those with Celiac Disease, a gluten intolerance, or are trying to lower their gluten intake understand the struggle to find a good GF hamburger bun.

Just like GF bread, there are many options at different grocery stores for gluten-free hamburger buns. Again, I love Canyon Bakehouse’s options.

Gluten-Free Flour

When it comes to gluten-free baking, flour can be tricky. It is hard to know which brand works best and how it will turn out.

I love King Arthur gluten-free flour personally, but there are many options out there! I even have a whole post about everything you need to know about gluten-free flour.

How to make it

  • To make the chicken, dip each chicken breast into the bowl with the eggs
  • Then, dip into the flour mixture
  • Then go back into the eggs with the chicken

  • Lastly, dip the chicken into the breadcrumbs
  • Fry the breaded chicken breast in hot oil over medium heat

To prepare the sandwich, you will first want to combine the lettuce and ranch in a bowl. Toss the lettuce so it is covered with the ranch.

In one frying pan, fry both sides of the hamburgerbuns until they are golden brown. Cook the bacon in the other frying pan.

To assemble the sandwiches, place the chicken on the bottom bun then top with cheese and bacon. Then, add the ranch, lettuce, and tomato on top!

How else can I use these breaded chicken breasts?

If there is some leftover chicken or if you are looking for another way to use these breaded chicken breasts, I have a few ideas. Cooking a meal can be a lot of work, so use the leftovers to your advantage!

Leftover chicken is always great to throw on top of salads. It is an easy way to make your salad more filling, while also using leftovers.

Slicing up the chicken to add to gluten-free fettuccine is a delicious way to use the leftover chicken.

Another great recipe to use is my Gluten-Free Chicken Parmigiana. Since the chicken is already made, all that is needed is gluten-free pasta, and BAM! Dinner is ready.

How to store leftovers

An airtight container is your best friend when it comes to storing leftovers. It is the same with breaded chicken. Place the chicken in the fridge in an airtight container and it will last up to 3 to 4 days.

Wrapping the chicken in aluminum foil or plastic wrap will also do the job.
