This healthy homemade trail mix is the perfect snack to pack for hikes, camping trips, school, and work lunches, or just the 3pm slump that inevitably hits me every SINGLE day. It’s one of my favorite homemade trail mix recipes, because I can whip it up in minutes and it tastes great, both of which are incredibly important when it comes to snacking! This paleo trail mix recipe (which is also a low carb trail mix) is a healthy and nutritious combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and a tad of dark chocolate for good measure.

We usually have a Mason jar full of trail mix at any given time, because it’s just so easy to throw together. The whole family loves grabbing a handful for a snack. Plus, have you seen the prices on trail mix? It’s CRAZY! Make your own! Then you can add as many chocolate chips as you want 😉

What Is Trail Mix?

Trail mix is a combination of nuts, seeds, chocolate, and fruit that is all mixed together. It was originally created for a hearty snack for long hikes.

Now it’s mainstream and just about everyone loves trail mix as a filling and delicious snack.

How To Make Trail Mix

I seriously don’t think you could find a more straightforward recipe in the world! There is nothing to it, and the hardest part is figuring out which ingredients you want to add to your DIY trail mix.

  • Mix together nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and chocolate. Give them a shake and store in a glass jar or container. I used almonds, macadamia nuts, walnuts, pecans, pepitas, hemp seeds, dates, apricots, and dark chocolate pieces.

TIP #1: You can make low carb trail mix by omitting the dried fruit, and using sugar-free chocolate chips.

TIP #2: If you’re taking this snack on-the-go, you can portion the trail mix right into individual containers.

How Do You Store Healthy Homemade Trail Mix?

Always store the healthy homemade trail mix in an airtight container. I prefer glass, like a Mason jar, because it stores easily and I don’t have to worry about air getting to the ingredients.

When you add in fruit, that the fruit should be thoroughly dried out. You don’t want fruit that is wet, or it will damage the entire paleo trail mix recipe. If stored properly with dry fruit, it will last around 2 months.

Can You Freeze Homemade Trail Mix Recipes?

Yes, most homemade trail mix recipes can be frozen without an issue. Store them in an airtight container and place the low carb trail mix in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Whenever you are ready to eat it, just remove from the freezer, set on the counter for a few minutes and start munching.
