This year, the first day of spring and the vernal equinox fall on March 19th. The flowers don’t know what day of the year it is, though. They can, however, since the days growing longer and the temperatures getting warmer, and these changes are what prompts them to start to grow and blossom.

In the United States, we recognize the first day of spring as the vernal equinox. People in other parts of the world, however, use the lunar calendar to determine when the seasons change. In Japan, people take their cue from the flowers themselves. Japan doesn’t officially recognize the beginning of spring until the cherry blossoms, their national flower, bloom.

When Exactly Do Spring Flowers Bloom?

Spring flowers, even in cold climates, can bloom as early as late January. Crocuses, Lenten roses, and snowdrops pop their way through the snow and frost to reveal their brilliant colors. Traditional spring flowers like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinthbegin blooming toward the end of March. Others need more sunshine and don’t bloom until May or the middle of June. Some of these late bloomers include bluebells, roses, peonies, and lilacs.

Azaleas are the official flowers of femininity. They’re lush, green shrubs that bloom with delicate flowers in shades of pink, red, and white every spring. They’re favored to give as potted plants, to enjoy in a garden, or to use in floral arrangements.

5. Primrose

The primrose features clusters of vibrantly colored flowers that bloom at the center of lush, green leaves. These stunning plants symbolize young love, making then perfect for a new romance.

6. Freesia

The flower of friendship, freesias bloom with up to twelve blossoms on a single stem. They come in all the brightest colors of the rainbow and have an unmistakably lovely fragrance.

7. Lilacs

Lilacs are also recognized for their perfume. These shrubs can grow up to 15 feet tall, and in full bloom, they’ll make a whole neighborhood smell like spring. In pink, purple, blue, and white, they represent passion, spirituality, happiness, and purity.
